What is creative video agency in Malaysia?

What is a creative video agency and how does it differ from a traditional advertising agency and video production house?

Well the short answer is that a creative video agency is where the video is both ideated and made. A creative video agency is also a hybrid of an advertising agency and a video production house.

You see, traditionally the creative industry is set up so that when a company like yours wants to reach out to its customers with a new piece of communications, they’ll go via an advertising agency. The ad agency is there to think up the big idea as well as scope out the project, handle the overall budget, decide the media channels and accomplish your business and communication objectives. The ad agency will then take a big chunk of that overall budget for themselves and use the rest to source a video production house to execute the idea. Video production houses are hired by ad agencies because ad agencies have no cameras and lights, they’re not experts in video execution, they’re experts in ideas. So production houses are trusted by the agency to turn the storyboard and script into reality.

Why should you choose a creative video agency in Malaysia?

So what’s the point of a creative video agency if I already have an advertising agency and a video production house? Well for the most part they are still very relevant. As we know from our own experiences; it’s more effective to specialise in doing one thing well than trying to do everything ourselves. But things aren’t what they used to be. We’ve moved from TV and print to multiple digital platforms. Client’s too want content faster and in multiple formats, increasingly video-centric. And as our customers shift online, so too businesses are utilising video as the default tool to connect with their audiences online.

All the technology for making films and videos has become a lot cheaper and better too. Gone are the days of requiring a huge crew and deep pockets to make a television commercial or high-end corporate video. We know this for ourselves because we use an example of this everyday – smartphones. They’ve made it possible for anyone to be a content creator or maybe just become a baby photographer of our two year old! Essentially technology has democratised filmmaking. And it’s in this new landscape where the hybrid of advertising agency and video production house has emerged. Where video has shifted from being an ‘add-on’ to being a central part of any marketing campaign.

But whilst the costs of producing video content have come down, quality has not. With the access to better and cheaper filmmaking technology, both large production houses and individual filmmakers alike can pull off stunning content. And those individual filmmakers and small video crews don’t have the large overheads of the traditional industry setup so they can pass that onto the clients. Which is why nowadays when we watch an ad on say YouTube, we might get fooled into thinking it’s some high end brand like Apple and then at the end we find out it’s from some unknown company or small brand who would clearly have a lesser budget than Apple.

Creating the big picture with a creative video agency

Even large brands and global multinationals are getting smarter in this regard and are bypassing the traditional ad agency or digital marketing agency and going direct with creative video agencies and smaller video production companies to help them make their budgets go further whilst still creating high quality video content.

But what about creating that big idea? Surely that’s the space for only the big guns at the ad agencies. Well not really. You see, ad agencies are like any other company; they’re made up of humans. And that creative team isn’t an army, it’s just an art director (visuals) and copywriter (words) overseen by a creative director.

Of course there are other people like planners and strategists who are essential at things like research, insights and scoping. But it’s that core team of two or three who basically come up with the ideas. And their brainstorming is not any special secret sauce process either. A good idea doesn’t come from a blank piece of paper or whiteboard. The opposite in fact. It starts with defining and constraining the project parameters to write a sharp creative brief. It’s about trimming back and being rather scientific. So that secret sauce? It’s actually just a small team with a clear brief and some creative thinking.

Is a creative video production agency in Malaysia a better choice?

So where does that leave ad agencies and production houses? Ad agencies still have a firm place for large campaigns like high-end car commercials and large television commercials. There is still an advantage in specialising. But the lines are blurred. They too are having to adapt to this new landscape. Traditional production houses have also had to adapt by either downsizing or catering more to the likes of big Netflix series, movies and television shows and less on commercial, branding and corporate work.

So where does that leave you? Well think of it like this. Never before have organisations had so much opportunity to create exciting, memorable and quality video content. So with this in mind, now is the time to take advantage of this new landscape and get ahead of your competitors. So find a creative video agency who gets you, who gets your brand, who you feel you can trust and get started on something great!
